Please join us for a research presentation on Martha Hughes Cannon and Zitkala-Ša, two women who had tremendous impact on Utah and U.S. history, and a sneak peek screening of the first episode of UNLADYLIKE2020.

UNLADYLIKE2020 is an innovative multimedia series featuring extraordinary, unsung women who changed America at the turn of the 20th century, launching in 2020 in honor of the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage, the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, and the 150th anniversary of Utah women’s suffrage.

This event includes a:

  • Presentation by documentary filmmaker and UNLADYLIKE2020 series creator Charlotte Mangin on her research about Martha Hughes Cannon, the first female state senator, and Zitkala-Ša, Native American author, civil rights activist, and musician, and on the creative process behind telling these women’s stories through animated documentary film
  • Screening of the UNLADYLIKE2020 trailer and a sneak peek of the first episode in the series, which tells the story of aviator Bessie Coleman, the first African American woman pilot
  • Panel discussion moderated by Neylan McBaine, CEO of Better Days 2020, with Charlotte Mangin, Jane Hafen, Professor Emerita of English, University of Nevada, Las Vegas and editor of a collection of Zitkala-Ša’s writings Dreams and Thunder, and other special guests.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
