Artist's Statement
My artistic journey is a harmonious blending of technique, emotion, and nature's splendor. Working primarily with a layered approach, I begin with acrylic underpainting and build on it with rich oil layers. This technique allows me to create depth and texture, particularly in my landscape work where palette knives sculpt thicker rock formations and intriguing planes. Brushes are my tools for softening edges, creating delicate transitions in clouds, and laying down solid areas of color. Bold, blended colors add visual interest, sometimes pushing the boundaries to evoke drama and emotion.
For subject matter, I often turn to photographic references, infusing them with my memories, weaving in elements of nostalgia and personal experience.
A scene captures my attention with its inherent beauty or the emotional response it elicits within me. Inspiration blooms from the natural world.
Over time, I have developed my techniques, adhering to fundamental color theory, and design principles such as composition, balance, contrast, emphasis, and rhythm. The "S" pattern, for instance, often finds its way into my compositions.
Each piece is a testament to the convergence of learned techniques and instinctive artistry, reflecting not just the world around me, but the world within me.
Artist's Bio
Rosemary Gioielli was born and raised on Long Island, New York, where the whispers of the ocean first stirred her artistic soul. Rosemary's journey across the country brought her to Utah thirty years ago, a place that has become an integral part of her creative identity.
At the age of 11, Rosemary encountered a surrealist painting of a child lifting the seashore to peer underneath. This moment revealed to her that artists are the magicians who bring dreams and fantasies into the world. A sensitive and introverted child, Rosemary found solace in the non-verbal expression that drawing and painting provided, a portal for emotions that words could not convey.
Rosemary was a self-taught artist, honing her skills through personal exploration and practice. Her formal artistic journey began in 2012 at SLCC, she pursued a degree in Visual Art and Design.
A retired florist and horticulturist, her deep connection with nature is evident. Rosemary remains committed to capturing the essence of the world around her, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of art in society.
