SHH! is a new concert series featuring the work of nine local composers who have composed and arranged quiet music specifically for the Library.

Spend time in the Library while listening to live, ambient music. SHH! concerts will be held the second Sunday of each month: October 14, November 11, and December 9. Performances will take place at different — sometimes surprising — locations throughout the Main Library.

Artist About the Artist

T.E.V. Ensemble

T.E.V. will be performing two new and site specific compositions as well as some of their favorite arrangements from the past year.

T.E.V. Ensemble is a performance troupe with a loose cast of members who have performed with bowling balls, wire hangers, fireballs, bottle rockets, glockenspiels, bb guns, saxophones, double flute drones, prepared tape, plastic bags, pumpkins, slide whistles, radios, microphones, etc. They have recently begun applying their experimental style to more traditional song structures.

Christian Asplund

Christian will be playing the viola with preparations and alternative bows from the organic world.

Christian Asplund is a Canadian-American composer-performer and scholar based in Utah where he teaches at Brigham Young University. His scores are published by Frog Peak Music and his writings have appeared in Perspectives of New Music, American Music, Illinois University Press, and University of Washington Press.

Hannah Johnson McLaughlin

Hannah CJ McLaughlin is a musicologist and vocal artist. She lives in Princeton, New Jersey with her husband, studying music history. She is an active member of Utah's experimental music community, having been part of several major productions with the Deseret Experimental Opera Company (DEXO) and Brigham Young University, where she received her Master's Degree last year.

Ghost Rhapsody, performed by saxophonist Nathan Adams, is a piece for "silent" saxophone: a written-out tune, complete with dynamics and articulations, practiced extensively before the performance. However, the actual performance of the piece will be done without actually phonating with the instrument; instead, the performer blows wind through it without making the reed vibrate. The result: a saxophone performance made up primarily with breath sounds and clicks from the keys. Nathan is meant to infuse his performance with just as much soul and musicality as he did in practice; that the music he knows in his head will be made manifest in both his mannerisms and in his "silent" playing.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
