SHH! is a new concert series featuring the work of nine local composers who have composed and arranged quiet music specifically for the Library.

Spend time in the Library while listening to live, ambient music. SHH! concerts will be held the second Sunday of each month: October 14, November 11, and December 9. Performances will take place at different — sometimes surprising — locations throughout the Main Library.

Artist About the Artist

Jazz Jaguars

Jazz Jaguars will be performing interactive music that the listener can silence or start with their own actions, with only a few seconds of delay.

Jazz Jaguars have consistently aspired to play sensitive, beautiful music by fusing elements of traditional jazz with doom lounge (yes, it’s an actual genre). They are also the curators of “Jazz Jagz Wednesday Doom Lounge Nite At Twilite Lounge," an weekly art/music show running at the Twilite Lounge since 2015.

Brian Pickles

For this event, Brian will be using recordings of outdoor scenes (sounds recorded in coastal North Carolina, downtown SLC, and other locations), along with the modular synthesizer. The idea is to create a subtle aural accompaniment to the physical surroundings — layered sounds and "musical" gestures, alternating with periods of silence.

Brian Pickles (synthesizer, sampler, field recordings, etc.) creates improvised sound environments, using a variety of homemade recordings, augmented with add'l instrumental sounds.

Katie Porter

For this edition of SHH! clarinetist Katie Porter will play music of the Wandelweiser Collective: Works for quiet clarinet in space, time, and silence by Michael Pisaro, Eva-Maria Houben, Jürg Frey, Manfred Werder.

Katie porter is a clarinetist and curator specializing in experimental music. She co-founded the venue Listen/Space (Brooklyn, NY) and curates the Listen/Space Commissions. She also co-directs the VU Symposium for experimental, improvised and electronic music (Park City, Utah) and is working on a giant multi-year project of experimental works for solo clarinet at Nancy Holt’s Sun Tunnels, a land artwork in remote northern Utah.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
