To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, the Babcock Performing Readers will present a selection from the poetry written by young men and women facing the horror of the Great War.

November 11, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended the fighting in World War I. To commemorate the occasion, the Babcock Performing Readers will present a selection from the wealth of poetry written by young men and women facing the brutal combat and unprecedented horror that was the Great War. The price of being a war poet was high. At a minimum, it was physical or mental trauma, and at most, a violent death. These young poets offer a range of perspectives, but all speak from direct experience of the "war to end all wars."

For 38 years the Babcock Readers have given voice to a wide range of literary styles and genres including poetry, short stories, plays, essays and speeches. They perform monthly at the Little Theatre in the Union Building at the University of Utah.

About the branch

Considered to be one of the finest Carnegie Libraries in the West, this 8,900 square foot library has two levels. Since its opening in 1918, it has been an important part of city services to Westside residents. The Chapman Branch was completely renovated, including an updated HVAC, following the collapse of the roof during 1993. A major remodel of the basement level meeting space in 2002 resulted in a much improved children's area and expanded service and collection space for adults on the ground level. A small meeting room is available for public use, and free wi-fi access is provided throughout the library. Street parking is available to the south of the building, and an external book drop is located on the east side of the building for returning library materials after hours.
