Artist's Statement
In my youth I spent most of my life outdoors in some fashion, at different points in my life as a Nordic skier with Olympic aspirations, or as a guide for canoe trips through the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota. I woke up early, energized, and ready to step out into the open sky. This is where I knew my way and I felt most comfortable. As I’ve grown older, I’ve found myself pulled further and further away from the outdoors and the Minnesota wilderness where at one point I felt at home. Now, my engagement with the wilderness is relegated to the weekends, or brief snatches of time when the daylight is still good after I’ve finished my desk job. My photographs are an attempt to recapture the perspectives I experienced when I myself was a part of the landscape and knew the lakes and rivers and how the animals moved in their elements.
Artist's Bio
Mac Read began taking photographs along the St. Croix River in Minnesota. As his life took him to the American West, his photographic language evolved. He creates images of the beautifully forlorn, out of the way places of the West, inviting the viewer to reconsider the overlooked.
Mac has exhibited his photographs in Utah and Montana. At national juried exhibitions including the 5th Annual National Juried Photography Show at SAGE Community Arts Gallery in Sheridan, Wyoming and Properties of Water Exhibition at the Arts Benicia Gallery, Benicia, California.
