ARTIST STATEMENT

“Artistic Musings of a Homeschool Mind” is a group of artworks I’ve been working on for about a year now. History and literature have inspired me very much in my art, as have themes of space, nature, women, my spiritual beliefs, and mythology. These are the things that have inspired me since the beginning of my artistic journey, back when I was a little girl, when stories and school lessons would take me to faraway lands filled with magic and wonder, and my imagination would run wild with ideas.  Bright colors in different mediums and large canvases or paper help bring these worlds to life and help others to see and become a part of the sometimes odd worlds I envision.  I try to create worlds of wonder and creation in my art, by taking the mundane and ordinary and making thoughtful pieces of art that make us reconsider our humanity and place in this marvelous universe.

ARTIST BIO

Olivia was born in Jonesboro, Arkansas and grew up with a large family who moved quite a lot. She currently lives in Salt lake City, Utah with her 6 brothers and sisters and 2 loving parents.
She draws inspiration from the natural world and the people she sees and reads about in historical novels, mythology, and history books. She is inspired by classical artists such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo, while also retaining a love for pop surrealism and impressionism. Music is also a large portion of inspiration for her and is an important aspect of creating her art. Her style is unique, with many depictions of women and animals, or both as one. She uses watercolors, acrylics, and ink pens for now but plans to work on oil painting in the near future. She is self-taught and has had no formal lessons or training, save for books read to advance her technique.
She has won the Teen Tech Month art prize for Salt Lake County library services Teen Tech Month 2017, and won 7th place at the State Fair in the Young Amateurs category for her work “Superior Being” in September 2018.
She exhibited at the Midvale Harvest Festival in August of 2018, and has presented her work at the Urban Arts Gallery open call night at the Gateway Mall.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
