A projected display of the international traveling poster exhibition will be shown on the outside of our building on the corner of 400 South and 200 East, facing TRAX.

TOLERANCE is a city-wide presentation of an international traveling poster exhibition conceived and organized by renowned designer Mirko Ilić and co-produced with Salt Lake City's Dallas Graham, founder of the Red Fred Project. The Tolerance show features prominent designers from around the world who have created and donated a poster incorporating the word Tolerance, written in their particular language and portraying subject matter they care about. This traveling show is a not-for-profit venture.

From January to March 2019, several local institutions including The City Library, AIGA SLC, Ballet West, The Blocks/SLC Culture Core, KRCL, Pioneer Park Coalition, Ririe Woodbury Dance Co., Salt Lake Film Society, Salt Lake County Center for the Arts, Salt Lake County Library, SB Dance, The Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, and UMFA will host different iterations of the poster show and programs promoting the idea of creating an environment of tolerance. A map is available at our Welcome Desk.

Mirko Ilić will be in SLC to participate in a round-table with community leaders on January 22, and will give a lecture at the reception and opening at UMFA on January 23 at 7pm.

The City Library will present a projected display of all the present designs on the outside of our building on the corner of 400 South and 200 East, facing TRAX, on the night of January 23 from 5:30–10pm. We will also display a selection of the posters in our Urban Room from January 11 through February 27. There will be an ongoing interactive display in the Library, where visitors are invited to contribute a written statement about how they incorporate tolerance and inclusion into their lives.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
