Sweet Branch

Meeting Room

A writing workshop series exploring how to show (not tell) as you put emotion on the page. Each session will feature a writing prompt, workshop time, discussion, and feedback.

Please bring your own laptop or favorite notepad for writing.

Held the third Saturday of each month, February through April.

SCHEDULE

Sat, Feb 16, 10am–1pm · The Beginning of Us

Write the story of how you met someone you love. After a discussion about how to show the scene rather than tell the story, you’ll write a scene full of gorgeous detail. Share with the class, if you wish. Bring someone you love and see how memory is subjective, but the story is sweet.

Sat, Mar 16, 10am–1pm · Don’t Ever Tell Me You Love Me

Learn how to say "I love you," without using those three words. There are many types of love: familiar, erotic, obsessive, enduring, selfless. All of these are often summarized with "I love you," a phrase that has come to lack power in its written form. After discussion several inspiring works, you’ll write your own scene full of detail and dialogue that shows love without saying those three little words.

Sat, Apr 20, 10am–1pm · Sorry, Not Sorry

Think back to a powerful argument with someone you love, then write the scene from their point of view. You won’t tell the reasons for the argument, instead you’ll recreate the scene from the beginning to the end. To add to the fun, you’ll incorporate a series of Valentine's Day candy conversation hearts into your tale. Feel free change the names to protect the innocent. In the end, you’ll have honed your writing craft, written a powerful scene, and received a therapy session all in one.
