Artist's Statement
Saltgrass Printmakers Community Project, 2025 Inspired by the Surrealist drawing game Exquisite Corpse, this collaborative printmaking project celebrates creativity, chance, and community. In the original game, participants contribute to a drawing in sequence, seeing only a fragment of the previous artist’s work and creating unexpected visual connections.
To reimagine this concept on a larger scale, Saltgrass Printmakers invited local artists and community members to carve individual 24" × 24" woodblocks in honor of 2025, the Chinese Year of the Snake. Each participant was given a designated starting and ending point, allowing the image to flow continuously from one block to the next while leaving the overall composition unknown. The blocks were printed together during a community printing event, revealing for the first time a serpent shaped by many hands and imaginations. The resulting work embodies collaboration, surprise, and the endless possibilities that emerge when individual voices come together to create a unified whole.

Saltgrass Printmakers is a nonprofit, community-focused print shop in Salt Lake City, Utah, where artists of all experience levels are welcome. Our mission is to celebrate and support printmaking as an important part of the fine arts by making it accessible to everyone.
We offer hands-on classes, public workshops, and open access to professional printmaking equipment, promoting opportunities for people to learn, create, and collaborate. Whether you're a seasoned artist or just getting started, Saltgrass is a place to connect, share ideas, and explore the art of printmaking. Founded in November 2003 by Erik Brunvand, Sandy Brunvand, and Stefanie Dykes, Saltgrass Printmakers was honored with the 2010 Salt Lake City Mayor’s Artists Award for its contributions to the local arts community.

About the branch
Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.
A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
