Artist Statement

My art is guided by my own sensitivity, pensiveness, and natural penchant toward irony.  I
am driven to question, doubt and suppose.  My pieces are narratives that incorporate a spirit of
deference as well as disobedience.  Because I’m always searching, dissecting and discovering,
the meaning of my work frequently evolves beyond its original intent, making me only the baton
and the universe the maestro.

Off the record, I walk to an empty space on the coffee house couch and sit; in the middle of
everywhere. On a table, I squint to examine how one of a bunch of jumbled puzzle pieces tries
to relate to its neighbor. The outer quarter of each piece is an exact match for the interlocking
parts that surround it. Those pieces share some similarities with their center piece, but each
one is still unique. The further you get away from center, in all directions, the less alike each
section becomes. While each singular piece displays just a tiny part of the picture’s full image,
when fit together, each individual contributes what is needed to make the puzzle whole.

Artist Bio

Kathy Simpson is a Salt Lake artist working primarily in oils and mixed media. Her oil paintings are precise and
meticulous, painted using layering techniques of the Old Masters. Her mixed media pieces are emotive and tell
stories that both interrogate and reflect our culture. Her artwork is included in a number of private art collections
throughout the U.S.

About the branch

The pleasing design of the Anderson-Foothill Branch has two unique elements as part of its plan. The first is a passive solar energy design that includes earth berming, window placement for solar heating, and zone supplemental heating/cooling. The second element of this 14,900 square foot community library built in 1985, expanded in 1992 and in 2002, is a modular design.

The Anderson-Foothill Branch has a meeting room available for public use with tables, chairs, and a projector screen. The Anderson-Foothill Branch's outdoor amphitheater is a popular location for summer concerts. Free parking is available to the north and south of the building, and free wi-fi access is provided throughout the library.
