12 Minutes Max is a monthly experimental performance series featuring short works by local artists in many disciplines.

One Sunday a month, we present three original pieces in a varied mix, chosen from music, dance, film, theater, performance art, writing, and the like — each 12 minutes or less. The whole event is short and sweet, taking about an hour.

Following each event, we serve coffee and cookies in an informal gathering, a chance for conversation with the artists.

Katie Porter will present a snippet of her ongoing project: a 4 channel audio/video installation piece of experimental clarinet works performed and recorded at Nancy Holt's iconic land artwork, the Sun Tunnels, deep in the Utah desert. Katie is a clarinetist and curator specializing in experimental music.  Her ensemble, Red Desert, with composer/percussionist Devin Maxwell are Artists-in-Residence at Westminster College for the 2019/20 school year. Ex-vegan venture capitalist Count Kalanick will present his DED Talk entitled We Should All Be Vampires. "We're taught to recycle, to drive less, to make many individual consumer choices in an effort to stop climate change - but we're leaving out one of the most effective lifestyle changes we could all make tonight to keep our world immortal," says Count Kalanick.  In this classic DED talk that started a worldwide conversation about Vampirism, Kalanick asks that we begin to dream about and plan for a more reverent, and more revenant, society. DED is a nonprofit devoted to dreadful ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (12 minutes or less). DED began in 1984 B.C. at a coven where Death, Education, and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. DED: Ideas Worth Dreading

Heartland will share an excerpt of Cosmos - Heartland's upcoming performance + Dance Party (December 21st at Envelop...please see mollyheller.com for more info). This work-in-progress investigates the scales of invisibility/visibility, seasonal change, ritual, and the cultivation of connection. Heartland is a multi-disciplinary collective directed by Molly Heller, with collaborators in dance, the visual arts, and music composition and performance. Heller is also an Assistant Professor in the School of Dance at the University of Utah. Performances by the Heartlanders: Nick Blaylock, Brian Gerke, Molly Heller, Marissa Mooney, and Melissa Younker, along with music composition and performance by Nick Foster and Mike Wall.

This program is modeled after 12 Minutes Max, a performance laboratory originated by On the Boards in Seattle.

About the library

Artist Statement:

Painting is how I convey the connection I feel to the wondrous animals of our world, their reality, separate, yet accessible. I am endlessly fascinated by these other lives, the similarities and differences between them and us, and the wonder that we can communicate with them.

Watercolor is my chosen medium, I love its immediacy and the way the colors blend and flow together, as naturally and elusively as the animals I paint. No other medium has caught my imagination the way watercolor has.  I don’t consider a painting a success until the animal seems to live and breathe on the page, so you can almost know what it is thinking. I always paint the eyes first for this reason. I enjoy playing with colors and exploring what the watercolors can do. Like John Singer Sargent, I want to see how many colors can go into white.

Recently I was privileged to go to South Africa on safari. Seeing the animals in the wild, where I was the one behind the fence. It was very inspiring. We were able to watch them in their element, acting naturally, seeing them in a way that the zoo or TV just can’t match. I am trying to capture their energy, the colors and feel of that world in my art.
