ARTIST STATEMENT:

What is the source of the ambiguous feeling when we stand in front of the works created by the masters of modern art and how do we react to such works? Artists and thinkers have tried to answer such questions, and specifically about abstract art, for more than a hundred years now and I am still struggling to find an answer for myself. My strongest reaction, if moved by an artwork, has always been the need to express and to convey certain vision which would illustrate my own emotions and which could possibly trigger some form of emotional state in others. Having been exposed to diverse and sometimes conflicting views, cultures and backgrounds, I have merged to develop an eclectic but plain-speaking expression. Using elementary shapes, colors and contents, I try to be impartial about the result. The most joyful and at the same time most challenging element is to explore where a painting is taking me. Talking about a painting is, of course, useful but, obviously, the ultimate statement is nothing but the painting itself.

ARTIST BIO:

Mani Motiee, an Iranian born painter, Tehran 1948, began his drawing, sculpting and painting experiences in early 80s in Paris France, teaching and working with several masters of plastic [visual] arts in private ateliers, associated with “Paris Ateliers”. His approach gradually evolved from realism in sculpting toward abstract painting. His exposure to the diverse spheres allowed him to develop eclectic expressions in painting. Nourished by cultural diversities, and conscious of their contrasts, he developed selective features of each tradition harmoniously throughout his works. As such, though merged from varied backgrounds and immersed in dissimilar experiences, his artistic approach does not characterize any particular affinity. His lyrical and poetic style of expression has vague shades of his native land. His collection on the web reflects pure abstraction, landscape sensation or weaving designs.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
