Freedom of Expression: Watercolors

Art Reception - Exhibit Runs Until Jun 10

Paintings by Katie Felgar · Exhibit runs from Apr 29 - Jun 10

ARTIST STATEMENT:

I enjoy watercolor, and I like experimenting with it. I like to use it with different materials to see how it reacts. I also make abstract art and collages, and occasionally use acrylic. Wet-on-wet, dripping rubbing alcohol, and tilting the paper to let the colors flow are techniques I enjoy. I like bright, vivid colors because they bring out happiness, and they make me feel peaceful. The art I create has free-flowing colorful clouds, which stand out against the stark black lines.  The bright colors make me feel happy, but the dark lines make me feel like there are only certain places to be happy. This process is like meditation for me. It helps me to imagine myself in a peaceful world and deal with change. In these pieces, I confront my depressing thoughts with bright cotton candy clouds of color.

ARTIST BIO:

I’ve been doing art ever since I was 5 or 6. I had a brain tumor when I was 8, and it left me legally blind and partially paralyzed on my left side. I find art very therapeutic and relaxing. I began my journey in art with using soft chalk pastels. I then moved on to watercolors, and stuck with that. I sometimes will get tired of watercolors and I enjoy experimenting with different mediums. I attend TURN City Center for the Arts five days a week to further my development as an artist, and also teach a watercolors class there twice a month.

About the branch

This beautiful facility was designed to complement the Rose Park neighborhood with sensitivity to its site on the Jordan River Parkway. An open space plan, with a large community meeting room and outside deck area, will accommodate this growing community for many years.

The south property of the Day-Riverside Branch is home to TreeUtah's EcoGarden, a "food forest" where all members of the community can learn about urban farming and organic gardening. The Day-Riverside Branch has a meeting room available for public use that features tables, chairs, a projector screen, and a piano.

Free parking is available to the west of the building, and free wi-fi access is provided throughout the library.
