12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series featuring short works by local artists in many disciplines.

Musician David Payne and his bandmate will perform a piece called Civil Rights on harp and electronics. David plays in the band DEMONS and hosts the DEMONS Concert Series and Social Night on Saturdays.

James Talbot will screen his short film TO SEE A HORSE RUNNING THROUGH PASTURE AFTER DARK, of which he says “Pursuit of something natural but unobserved. I think I saw one on the farm road by the mouth of the canyon, in full gallop; it must have been three or four in the morning. The more you looked, the more it was there, but the less sense it made. Another way to feel small.” James is an artist and photographer. Usually searching for innocuous and discrete subject matter, his work seeks to mythologize places of personal significance. Through small visual details of colors, shadows, and other motifs, he hopes to capture a numinous spirit that contributes to a collective memory of those places.

Molly Heller, alongside composer Michael Wall, will perform Professor Bosco, inspired by rare photo diaries of Charlie Chaplin's public and private life and capturing the sensitive, dynamic range of Chaplin's physical expressions and candid moments of being in the "limelight."

“I always like walking in the rain, so no one can see me cry” - Charlie Chaplin

We will also see Heartland, a short dance film by Producer and Performer Molly Heller and Director Stéphane Glynn exploring themes of loss, attachment, and intimacy. Molly Heller is an Assistant Professor within the School of Dance at the University of Utah. She is also the Director of Heartland, a multi-disciplinary collective working within the mediums of dance, visual art, scenic and costume design, and music.   Mollyheller.com  findingheartland.com

Michael Wall is an internationally recognized composer, performer and educator who collaborates with dancers, choreographers and filmmakers around the world. You can find all of his music at: www.soundFORMovement.com

Stéphane Glynn is the Senior Vice President of Operations and Post-Production for Vavani Productions, an ethos-driven, Emmy®-award winning production company based in Salt Lake City.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
