12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series featuring short works by local artists in many disciplines.
Our November show will feature a longer performance which represents the work of several collaborators, and a regular “12 minute or shorter” film.
Viriditas is an interdisciplinary performance by Roxanne Gray, Ben Swisher, and Scout Invie with Bly Wallentine, Mase Sangster, and Charlotte Stehmeyer. They write: “ We live in an era of information and technology overdrive driven by automated forms of communication that can cause a disconnect, segmenting us into artificial groups and colonizing our time. Through the physical act of creating, we can reclaim time by intentionally slowing down, offering hope for the regrowth of connective tissues. Like mycelium’s network of fungal threads, organisms in nature collaborate to form creative systems of communication. Our collective has symbiotically adapted through collaboration among our artistic mediums of music, fiber crafts, and dance—sharing energy and creating new growth.”
“Viriditas is the natural driving force toward healing and wholeness, the vital power that sustains all life's greenness.” -Hildegard Von Bingen
Kym McDaniel will screen her film Exposed Neck (work in progress title), a piece that involves repetitive improvisations set to Boléro by Maurice Ravel. “I am interested in Boléro’s origin story (the repetition in the music is thought to be a sign of Ravel’s early-stage dementia) and the ideology that disability can be a form of creative revolution.” Kym is a filmmaker, collaborator, choreographer, and performer. Her films have recently shown at Ann Arbor Film Festival, Slamdance, UnionDocs, and Antimatter, among others. She is currently an Assistant Professor in Screendance at the University of Utah. www.kymmcdaniel.com

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.
Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.
A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
