Holding Ground

How do we hold on? How do we endure? What can we save?

Noon–1pm
Urban Room
Lisa DeFrance
       Salt Lake City, UT

       Kristina Lenzi
       Salt Lake City, UT

Lisa DeFrance works with textiles and makes performance art. She is also a 1st grade teacher. She thinks a lot about health. The health of a body and the mind, the health of a system, institution, city, environment. Health is dependent upon relationships; how we integrate and balance. During a performance she tries to suspend judgment and create a condition necessary for relating. She likes to find things that others have used and make new things with them. You can find some of these things at Fern & Reed

Kristina Lenzi (1966, Salt Lake City, UT, USA) lives in Midvale, Utah. She holds a BFA from the University of Utah in drawing and painting and an MFA from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in multidisciplinary art. She teaches art at Weber State University. Lenzi is the founder and curator of Salt Lake City Performance Art Festival. She has performed throughout the United States, and in Europe, and has exhibited her drawings and paintings nationally.

Red Playground Ball

Counteracting the bias of the brain’s focus on negative aspects of experience, two women practice the power of recalling positive memories.

Interdisciplinary Arts
       Collective

       Salt Lake City, UT

Interdisciplinary Arts Collective is a local group of musicians, dancers, poets, actors, artists, and anti-artists. Our work focuses primarily on exploring the creative and communicative potential generated by the intersection and subversion of artistic disciplines, particularly within the context of experimental and contemporary performance practices

FLUXConcert

FluxConcerts, which were originally developed by Fluxus artists during a European performance tour in 1962, are characterized by the realization of Fluxus event scores. These scores are text-based compositions that instruct the performers to interpret and complete actions such as La Monte Young's Composition #10, "Draw a straight line and follow it." Interdisciplinary Arts Collective's FLUXconcert at this festival will draw on work from composers like George Brecht, Yoko Ono, Alison Knowles, and others to feature multiple Flux scores that unfold, intersect, and overlap over the course of the performance, ranging from the absurd to the absurdly serious.

Noon–5pm
Urban Room
Tatiana Svrckova Larsen
       Kansas

Tatiana Svrckova Larsen is a Slovakia-born artist known for her unique approach to art, incorporating elements of fitness and physical movement into her work. She creates pieces that explore the human body and its relationship to movement, using mediums such as sculpture, painting, and performance art. Her work aims to create a new perspective on fitness, art, and how they can be intertwined and also reflects on the process of overcoming burdens and physical challenges.

Rise Above: A Performance Art Exploration of Overcoming Personal Challenges and Empowerment

In the rich tradition of Automatism, where there are no preconceived ideas and without regard to content or subject matter, Sam will seek to harness “the creativity of the unconscious mind” in the act of artistic creation. The goal of this entirely spontaneous piece is to provide viewers the opportunity to witness the birth and formation of a never-before-seen work of art. By the conclusion, a new artwork will be totally or substantially completed. The audience will share in the anticipation and excitement of being there At the Creation.

Noon–5pm
Urban Room
Preach R Sun
       US-based

U.S. based conjurer, ‘wilderness preacher' and 'fugitivist' — implements and

espouses: political activism, creative expression, and spiritual (new ritual constructed) modalities as means to activate cognitive contemplation and awareness in regards to the nature of freedom, humanity and a universal (‘SOLE’) consciousness. Sun, working at the interface between ‘art’, activism, and spiritual practice, simultaneously integrates and deconstructs these multimodal languages of expression as means to identify and excavate the roots of freedom and humanity. Through acts of creative consolidation involving spiritual processes of ritual, with protest tactics and creative abstract performance strategies, Sun also interrogates the nature and limits of these roots.

Preach R Sun — continuously building upon his living body of work, OneMan: The Liberation Project — most often works on the street creatively incorporating his abstract performance focused strategies, and ritualistic actions with political guerilla based tactics. However, the self-proclaimed ‘street preacher’ also presents in festivals and galleries, using performance and video as tools to further his praxis and ministry of social change: universal humanity, liberation, and a unitive ‘SOLE’ awakening.

The So(u)le Searcher: UnEarth[ling] (The Here Lies)

Excavating the universal man, a meditative ritual activation.

Rise Above: A Performance Art Exploration of Overcoming Personal Challenges and Empowerment

Rise Above is a performance art piece that invites visitors to confront and overcome their personal burdens through physical strength. Participants will engage in back squats using Olympic barbells and bumper plates on which they can write their burdens. The goal of this performance is to provide people with an empowering opportunity to physically express the act of overcoming their burdens and promoting physical and mental well-being.

Sinéad O'Donnell
       Dublin, Ireland

Sinéad O'Donnell, born and living in Dublin Ireland, is a performance artist whose practice is contextual. She has made works across the globe, integrating her learning of new cultures with personal experience. Sinead uses her body to create works that reference the challenging experiences that women face across the world: she gives a voice to those that have been silenced. Previous works have addressed: violence; grief; being neuro-diverse in a neuro-typical world; inclusion; and exclusion.

Stephanie García
       Salt Lake City/Mexico

3–4pm
The Plot (Outside Garden)
Jeff Huckleberry
       Boston, MA

Jeff has been performing art for the last 25 years, both nationally and internationally. He enjoys the bicycle, the hammer, the saw, the wood, his wife and son, his family, his friends, his work. (…except sometimes he doesn’t enjoy these things as much; it depends.) He is the son and grandson of far more practical people, which he tries to express in his art. His mother often thought he should stop getting naked in front of people and privately he thinks she is probably right; and something about death.
Untitled

For this performance Jeff will make an attempt. No promises.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
