12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series featuring experimental short works by local artists in many different disciplines.

Artist Trent Alvey will screen three of her very short videos: Trent Goes Bowling was shot by Jan Andrews and captures the action that created the broken mirror for Trent’s piece in the Art Access Exhibit “Good Fortune”. In Tunnel Vision, the Underground Transit Train pulls into a station and makes a quick retreat. It was shot by Trent and edited by Jan Andrews, as was I’m Floating in a Most Peculiar Way, shot at the Great Salt Lake with the help of Rosalie Winard for Trent’s show of the same name in 2018 at Finch Lane Gallery. Trent Alvey is a long-time Salt Lake City artist, and this work, in Geoff Wichert’s review “may be the most far-reaching of the many science-based projects that have animated Alvey’s art over the decades”.

Beloved artist and University of Utah professor emeritus Tony Smith died last Thanksgiving. As a tribute to Tony, we will screen Claudia Sisemore's short film of Tony talking in his studio about making the monumental drawing "The Big Tiny", which he exhibited at the City Library in 2016. At that point in his career, Ann Poore tells us, Tony “would rather show his work at Smith’s grocery store on the Avenues” than in a gallery. Earlier in his career and at the peak of his fame, he was “known as one of the top illusionist artists working in the country”. Filmmaker and artist Claudia Sisemore isn’t able to be with us for the screening, so Trent Alvey, who has been close friends with Claudia for decades, will return to the stage for our Q&A. Frank McEntire, whose close friendship with Tony goes way back, will also join us for the Q&A. Frank is a sculptor, independent curator, and arts administrator, is the former director of the Utah Arts Council, and was the art critic for The Salt Lake Tribune and Salt Lake City magazine.

12 Minutes Max is a curated monthly performance series, presented by the Salt Lake City Public Library, featuring original experimental works by local artists in many disciplines, including dance, music, film, and more. Each event includes varied performances, with a short Q&A after each piece. It is modeled after the program originated by On the Boards in Seattle.

About the branch

NOTE: The Main Library's Rooftop Terrace is closed for renovations.

Salt Lake City's Main Library, designed by internationally-acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie in conjunction with VCBO Architecture, opened in February 2003 and remains one of the most architecturally unique structures in Utah. This striking 240,000 square-foot structure houses more than 500,000 books and other materials, yet serves as more than just a repository of books and computers. It reflects and engages the city's imagination and aspirations. The structure embraces a public plaza, with shops and services at ground level, reading galleries above, and a 300-seat auditorium.

A multi-level reading area along the Glass Lens at the southern facade of the building looks out onto the plaza with stunning views of the city and Wasatch Mountains beyond. Spiraling fireplaces on four floors resemble a column of flame from the vantage of 200 East and 400 South. The Urban Room between the Library and the Crescent Wall is a space for all seasons, generously endowed with daylight and open to magnificent views.
