Track your super summer challenge activities

The universe is full of stories! With The City Library’s Super Summer Challenge, you can read a story, live a story, make a story, and tell your story. On this page, you’ll find all sorts of activities to complete, and you can win some stellar prizes along the way. See below to see all the out-of-this world events the Library has planned this summer.

How to play

The challenge has three levels, and each has its own constellation card. When you complete an activity, fill in one star on the constellation. Once the constellation is full, turn it in at any City Library and collect a prize. If you complete all three constellation cards, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a Grand Prize basket. Be sure to submit your constellation cards by August 10!

ACTIVITIES

Every time you do one of the activities below, fill in a shape in your tracker. You can do activities more than once. When all the shapes are filled in, tear out the corner and bring it to the Library for a prize!

LEVEL 1 · THE EAGLE

• Read a book together to fill in a star.
• Attend Book Baby, Storytime, or Playtime at the Library.
• Read at the park.
• Read a board book.
• Make a reading fort under a table with pillows and books.
• Check out a Baby Book Bag from the Library.
• Use your face as a toy. Show your baby all the things your face can do.
• Make up a story using your child's name and tell it to your child.
• Sing a lullaby.
• Sing a song with actions, like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider."
• Play with different shaped blocks to teach how shapes work.
• Draw pictures together and let your child tell a story about it.
• Go on a shopping trip together and describe everything you put in the cart.


LEVEL 2 · THE HARE

• Read a book together to fill in a star.
• Attend Book Baby, Storytime, or Playtime at the Library.
• Sign up for 1000 Books Before Kindergarten.
• Play Peek-A-Boo!
• Read a book while waiting for an appointment.
• Check out a Mother Goose book from the Library.
• Blow bubbles for your baby or with your toddler.
• Hide a toy behind your back and let your child guess what it is by giving clues.
• Record yourself telling a story about your life for your child to hear.
• Sing a song to your baby that someone sang to you as a child.
• Check out a children's music CD from the Library.
• Make letters out of playdough.
• Make a simple shaker by filling a paper bag with rice, then shake it to music.


LEVEL 3 · THE GREAT DOG

• Read a book together to fill in a star.
• Attend Book Baby, Storytime, or Playtime at the Library.
• Read a touch and feel book.
• During a trip, ask your child about things you see. Give them lots of time to respond!
• Look at family photos and point out the names of people.
• Read a book that has animals in it.
• Ask a Librarian for a children's song recommendation.
• Sing a nursery rhyme in different ways; slow, fast, with a silly voice.
• Sing a song during a diaper change.
• Do a sorting game.
• Have your toddler chase the light from a flashlight. Take turns chasing and aiming the light.
• Play with a chunky puzzle.
• Play with water; use bowls and other materials like dishcloths or newspaper.
