Track your super summer challenge activities

The universe is full of stories! With The City Library’s Super Summer Challenge, you can read a story, live a story, make a story, and tell your story. On this page, you’ll find all sorts of activities to complete, and you can win some stellar prizes along the way. See below to see all the out-of-this world events the Library has planned this summer.

How to play

The challenge has three levels, and each has its own constellation card. When you complete an activity, fill in one star on the constellation. Once the constellation is full, turn it in at any City Library and collect a prize. If you complete all three constellation cards, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a Grand Prize basket. Be sure to submit your constellation cards by August 10!

Science Fiction

ACTIVITIES

Every time you do one of the activities below, fill in a shape in your tracker. You can do activities more than once, but you must read at least 6 times. When all the shapes are filled in, tear out the corner and bring it to the Library for a prize!

LEVEL 1 · AQUILA, THE EAGLE

• Read for 30 minutes. (You must read at least 6 times)
• Participate in the Stellar Book Reviews Project.
• Go on a hike or a bike ride with friends or family.
• Explore the universe with virtual reality by attending a Universe Sandbox event.
• Paint an image of the night sky.
• Watch a movie set in space.
• Complete the teen scavenger hunt. Ask a Librarian for details!
• Create and name your own constellation.
• Write your own horoscope.
• Attend a Library event.
• Follow one of the Library’s social media accounts: @slcpl.


LEVEL 2 · TAURUS, THE BULL

• Read for 30 minutes. (You must read at least 6 times)
• Attend a free outdoor concert.
• Visit The Plot at the Main Library and learn about the plants there.
• Go stargazing and look for constellations.
• Explore a museum you’ve never been to.
• Attend a Library event.
• Watch the footage of the Moon Landing.
• Ask a Librarian about their favorite sci-fi TV show, movie, or book.
• Write a short story or zine.
• Watch the film Hidden Figures or read the book / eBook it was based on.
• Set a timer for five minutes and write about what you would tell an alien about life on Earth.


LEVEL 3 · CANIS MAJOR, THE GREAT DOG

• Read for 30 minutes. (You must read at least 6 times)
• Visit the Clark Planetarium and explore the exhibits. It’s free!
• Check out a cookbook and cook a meal for friends or family.
• Make a DIY gift for a friend.
• Record yourself telling a story about your life and share it with a friend or family member.
• Go to NASA’s website or social media accounts and look at the “Image of the Day.”
• Observe the phases of the moon. (Hint: these can usually be found on everyday calendars)
• Complete the Super Summer Challenge survey in your tracker booklet or on this webpage.
• Ask a Librarian for a book recommendation.
• Try food you’ve never tasted before. Two stars if it’s from a different culture.
• Research a female astronaut, like Sally Ride, Mae Jemison, or Ellen Ochoa.
• Attend a Library event.

Want to super-size your challenge? After you complete all three levels, talk to a Librarian about how to LEVEL UP for your chance to win even more prizes.


STELLAR BOOK REVIEW PROJECT

Teens can stop into any City Library and answer these questions:

• What book do you think is so stellar that every grown up should read it? Why do you think that?

Reviews will be displayed at the Library and adults are encouraged to read one of the recommended books.
